According to Abu Hurayra (ra), Allah’s Messenger (saw) said to his uncle Abu Talib when he was about to die,
“Make a profession that there is no god but Allah and I will bear testimony (of your being a Muslim) on the Day of Judgement.” But he (Abu Talib) refused to do so. Then, Allah revealed this verse, “You [Prophet] cannot guide everyone you love to the truth; it is Allah who guides whoever He will: He knows best those who will follow guidance” (al-Qasas, 28: 56).(M134, Muslim, al-Iman, 41)
According to ʿAbd Allah b. al-Daylami, he heard ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr (ra) say that he heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, “Indeed Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, created His creatures in darkness, then He cast His Light upon them, so whoever is touched by that light he is guided, and whoever is not, he goes astray. It is for this reason that I say that the pens have dried with Allah’s knowledge.” ( al-Tirmidhi, al-Iman, 18; Ibn Hanbal, II, 176)
According to Jabir (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) would deliver a sermon to the people, praise Allah (swt), and laud Him for what He deserves, and then say, “He whom Allah guides aright, there is none to mislead him, and he who is led astray, there is none to guide him (aright), and the best of speech is the Book of Allah.” (Muslim, al-Jumʿa, 45)
Hasan b. ʿAli (the Prophet’s grandson) (ra) said, “Allah’s Messenger taught me some phrases to say during the witr prayer (a prayer performed between the maghrib prayer and the fajr prayer), ‘O Allah! Guide me among those You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, befriend me among those You have befriended, bless me in what You have granted, and save me from the evil that You have decreed. Indeed, You decree, and none can pass decree, and none can pass decree upon You. Indeed, he is not humiliated whom You have befriended, blessed are You our Lord and Exalted.” (al-Tirmidhi, al-Witr, 10)
