According to Anas b. Malik (ra), “The Prophet (saw) sent a company called al-Qurrāʾ (to Najd to teach the faith), but they were killed (ambushed at the Bi’r/Well Maʿuna). I had never seen the Prophet (saw) so sad over anything as he was over them. So he said the Qunūt (prayer) for one month in the fajr prayer …” (al-Bukhari, al-Daʿawat, 58)
According to ʿAli b. Abi Talib (ra), “The Prophet (saw) used to say at the end of the witr (a prayer performed between the ‘isha’ prayer and the fajr prayer), ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath and in Your forgiveness from Your punishment. And I seek refuge in You from You; I cannot praise You enough; You are as You have praised Yourself.” (al-Nasaʾi, Qiyam al-layl, 51)
According to Abu Hurayra (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) performed the Qunūt at the ʿatama (first third of the night) prayer for a month. He said in it, “O Allah, … rescue the weak among the believers (from the oppression of pagans) …” (Abu Da’ud, al-Witr, 10)
According to Abu Hurayra (ra), it was said, “O Messenger of Allah! Invoke a curse upon the polytheists. Whereupon he said, ’I have not been sent as the invoker of curses, but I have been sent as mercy.’”
(Muslim, al-Birr, 87.)
