Abu Hurayra (ra) said, “the Messenger of Allah (saw) ordered us to throw dirt in the mouths of those who overpraise others.” (al-Tirmidhi, al-Zuhd, 54; Muslim, al-Zuhd, 68)
According to ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi Bakra, his father (ra) said, “A man praised another man in front of the Prophet (saw). The Prophet said thrice, ‘Waylaka (Woe on you)! You have cut the neck of your brother!’ The Prophet (saw) then added, ‘If it is indispensable for anyone of you to praise a person, then he should say, “I think that such-and-such person (is so-and-so), and Allah is the One Who will take his accounts (as He knows his reality) and none can sanctify anybody before Allah (and that only if he knows thoroughly about that person.)”’” (al-Bukhari, al-Adab, 95)
Muʿawiya (ra) heard Allah’s Messenger say, “Beware of (over)praising one another for it is (in a way) killing (one another).” (Ibn Maja, al-Adab, 36; Ibn Hanbal, IV, 93)
