According to Ibn ʿAbbas, the Messenger of Allah (saw) used to let his hair hang down while the polytheists used to part their hair. The People of the Book were used to letting their hair hang down and the Messenger of Allah (saw) liked to follow the People of the Book in matters about which he was not instructed otherwise. Then the Messenger of Allah (saw) parted his hair. (al-Bukhari, al-Manaqib, 23)
According to Abu Hurayra (ra), the Prophet (saw) said, “Jews and Christians do not dye their hair, so you should do he opposite of what they do.” (al-Bukhari, al-Libas, 67)
