According to Abu Hurayra (ra), the Prophet (saw) said, “A widow should not be given in marriage without her approval; and a virgin should not be given in marriage without her permission.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! How can we know we have her (the virgin’s) permission?” He said, “Her silence (indicates her permission).” (al-Bukhari, al-Nikah, 42)
According to Muhammad b. Hatib al-Jumahi (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) said the following: “The thing that differentiates lawful (marriage) from unlawful (relations) is announcing it by beating the tambourine and singing.” (al-Tirmidhi, al-Nikah, 6)
