ʿAbd Allah b. Maʿqil reported from his father that he heard ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿud (ra) say, “The Prophet (saw) said, “Remorse (for sin) is repentance.” (Ibn Hanbal, I, 423)
According to ʿAbd Allah (b. Masʿud) (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “Repentance from sin means turning away from it and not returning to it.” (Ibn Hanbal, I, 446)
Asmaʾ b. al-Hakam al-Fazari reported that he heard ʿAli say, “Abu Bakr narrated to me a tradition, and Abu Bakr (ra) narrated truthfully. He said that he heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, “When a servant (of Allah) commits a sin, and he performs wudu’ well, and then stands and prays two rakʿas (ritual prayer cycles), and asks forgiveness of Allah, Allah certainly forgives him.” (Abu Da’ud, al-Witr, 26)
According to Abu ʿUbayda b. ʿAbd Allah (ra), his father said, “The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, ’The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin at all.” (Ibn Maja, al-Zuhd, 30)
According to Abu Hurayra (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “Allah is more pleased with the repentance of one of you than one of you would be on finding the lost camel.” (Muslim, al-Tawba, 2)
